Mayor Toni Harp has tapped 11 people, including two high school students who serve on the Board of Education, to help find a replacement for departing Superintendent Garth Harries.
The Board of Ed voted late Monday night to approve a severance deal with Harries to have him leave his post in November, more than a year and a half before his contract expires.
Harp announced the formation of the committee in a 3:30 p.m. email Tuesday to Board of Ed members. The committee includes several board members and community leaders, including the CEO of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Will Ginsberg.
The text of the email message follows:
Based upon the motion to approve the separation agreement with the Superintendent of Schools at our meeting last night, I am appointing the following individuals to a search and transition committee for the interim superintendent and to plan a transition and search for a permanent superintendent:
Che Dawson
Daisy Gonzalez
Darnell Goldson
Tamiko Jackson McArthur, M.D.
Rev. Abraham Hernandez
Jason Bartlett
Dr. Abie Benitez
Jennifer Ricker
Will Ginsberg
Keisha Hannans
Pat DeLucia
Student Members: Coral Ortiz and Jacob Spell
I hope this committee will begin its work as soon as practicable.
Best,
Toni Harp
Why is the Mayor forming a search committee when she doesn't appoint the Superintendent. The Board of Education does. The BOE members, especially the elected ones, need to stop giving away their authority to Harp. The BOE should be the ones forming a committee if they see fit. NOT HARP!!!!
