In City, It’s Malloy Vs. DeStefano Redux

Posted to: Politics, State, Dixwell, Campaign 2010
Dan Malloy opened his regional campaign headquarters in a converted garage in New Haven’s black community—and made a direct pitch to opponents of the local mayor who’s behind his opponent for governor.
Call it a 2006 grudge match.
Malloy made the pitch to 75 supporters and “tire-kickers” (curious fence-sitters checking him out) crowding Tuesday night inside 119 Whalley Ave., the site of the former “Good News Garage” at the southern edge of the Dixwell neighborhood.
They assembled one day after a similar gathering of New Haven politicos crowded into Foster’s restaurant in the Ninth Square neighborhood to support the campaign of Ned Lamont, Malloy’s opponent in an Aug. 10 primary for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. (The Lamont campaign didn’t alert the press to that gathering.) Lamont’s event drew members and supporters of Mayor John DeStefano and the New Haven Democratic machine.
Malloy’s gathering, by contrast, drew a host of African-American aldermen and activists either opposed to the DeStefano machine or—as State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield suggested in comments to the crowd Tuesday night—branded as opponents because they don’t always toe the party line. Holder-Winfield is pictured with Dixwell activist Lisa Hopkins, who has also run campaigns against City Hall.
“Right now everybody in this city [political establishment] is going in one direction. You put a lot on the line when you go in the other direction,” Holder-Winfield said before introducing Malloy, a seven-term Stamford mayor, as the gubernatorial candidate with the experience to “go in there and understand how to govern.”
Malloy ran against New Haven Mayor DeStefano in a bitter 2006 gubernatorial primary. DeStefano won that election (before losing the general election). Four years later, a last-minute Malloy campaign ad still rankles DeStefano’s supporters and contributed to their mass support of Lamont. The ad showed DeStefano in a dress.
DeStefano sat out this year’s governor’s race, supporting Lamont instead. In 2006, DeStefano carried his home city easily; Malloy picked up support of a small group of local politicians angry at the mayor.
Tuesday night Malloy drew a broader crowd of local politicos, such as Hill Alderwoman Jackie James-Evans (pictured above). That could indicate that anti-machine sentiment has grown in New Haven, or that Malloy’s campaign has made more inroads in the city without the mayor on the ballot. (Both he and Lamont have promised to help cities by promoting urban jobs, cleaning brownfields, boosting public schools and transit.)
In either case, the gubernatorial primary is turning into a test for New Haven’s two Democratic Party camps, to see whether City Hall critics can match the machine in turning out the vote for a citywide race.
James-Evans is serving as co-coordinator of Malloy’s Whalley Avenue office along with another DeStefano critic, West Rock Alderman Darnell Goldson. The office will serve as campaign headquarters for the Third U.S. Congressional District. Lamont’s statewide headquarters are on New Haven’s Orange Street.
Shirt sleeves rolled up, voice rising at times, energized by the crowd, Malloy (pictured) urged the crowd to see his campaign as a vehicle to make their voice heard. He didn’t mention DeStefano’s name. He didn’t have to.
He also urged them to see his campaign as a people’s challenge to an inexperienced millionaire pouring his own money into the race. He didn’t mention Lamont’s name. He didn’t have to.
“Some people say, ‘That guy can’t win because he’s rich.’ If I can’t win, none of you can win,” Malloy said.
“Some people say, ‘That guy can’t win because the political hierarchy of certain places are with the other guy.’ If I can’t win, none of you can win.’”
In case they didn’t get the point, he promised they, not City Hall or the local party establishment, will be the go-to New Haveners at the governor’s office if he wins the election.
“When it comes to New Haven, you are the faces I see. When it comes to New Haven you are the leadership I believe in. When it comes to New Haven, you are the people I will return to to make decisions.”
Taking in the pledge were DeStefano critics like former State Rep. Bill Dyson (pictured), who toyed with a mayoral challenge last year; Jim Newton, who did run against DeStefano in 1999; Aldermen Michael Smart, Andrea Jackson-Brooks, Claudette Robinson-Thorpe, and Gerald Antunes ...
... as well as some veteran party machine supporters with whom DeStefano parted ways in a pivotal 2001 mayoral election, including business deal-maker Sal Brancati (pictured) ...
... and former Democratic Town Chairman Nick Balletto (at left in photo with Darnell Goldson).
Some DeStefano allies showed, too, such as Dixwell Alderman Greg Morehead (pictured).
Morehead said he’s supporting Malloy because “he has the leadership ability”—and because “he reached out to me” months before Lamont did. “The administration just assumes [incorrectly] some aldermen are going with Ned Lamont,” Morehead said.
Westville Alderman Sergio Rodriguez showed up, too. He refused to say whether he’s backing Malloy or Lamont for governor.
“No comment,” he said. “I’m busy doing other stuff.” Rodriguez is running for state representative.

Again Black and Latino so call leaders leading us like Judas Goats to eradication. For those who don’t know what a judas goat is,Ceck this out.
A Judas goat is a trained goat used at a slaughterhouse and in general animal herding. The Judas goat is trained to associate with sheep or cattle, leading them to a specific destination. In stockyards, a Judas goat will lead sheep to slaughter, while its own life is spared. Judas goats are also used to lead other animals to specific pens and on to trucks.
“Yes follow the judas goat to your death’s fools!HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! “
Malloy like the rest of the crooked two party system Hustlers aregood at calling in the judas goats to carry out there work.It is now down for Black and latino Politician to get out of the White control Two party system and get started building a FREEDOM PARTY that will give the people a true voice.

I’m somewhat taken aback by your comments Threefifths. Certainly I can understand your encouraging others to support your party of interest. But to make a blanket statement and label all those(members of the Black Community)who are supporting Malloy as a “Judas Goat” is totally, tenuous. If I were still residing in New Haven, I too would be supporting Malloy and encouraging others to do the same. Not that I think Lamont would be bad for the state, but because DeStefano is involved with his campaign. Moreover, I think it would be prudent of you with all of your intelligence, to refrain from deriding and maligning the intentions and integrity of your brothers and sisters. Finally, political positions are up for re-election every 2 years, which gives you ample time to structure a campaign to run for any political position in the city. In essence, let me share with you something that my lovely mother once shared with me. “If you don’t like the person who’s in office, then find someone to run against him. If you can’t find someone, then you yourself run against him. [...]

It’s not all about going against the DeStefano machine. And this from another person who has run against him. I think that the bigger issue is Malloy is the better candidate. He has more experience, he’s not resting on the laurels of a successful primary four years ago and he’s proof that we have a democracy, not a plutocracy. I also dislike the maneuverings of the New Haven Party Machine in its support of Jarjura. How can these so-called liberals support a anti-choice, anti-gay marriage candidate that is already endorsed by the ultra-conservative Family Institute of Connecticut? I support Dan Malloy and Kevin Lembo because they embody the kind of leadership that my conscience will be able to follow.

Why would you be someone taken aback by my comments of being both parties are white control.Or is it you can’t see the truth in front of you.Can you disprove my coments to be wrong. In fact a lot of People of color across this country feel the same wyabout how white males are leaders of the two party system and people of color are carry there water.
But to make a blanket statement and label all those(members of the Black Community)who are supporting Malloy as a “Judas Goat” is totally, tenuous.
You need to read the article and what I wrote.I said Again Black and Latino so call leaders At not time did I say members of the Black Community.

Well may be you should move back here,But in the mean time scince you don’t residing here and don’t pay taxes to live here and I do you are the one who needs to SHUT UP and take care of the problems in Atlanta, Georgia which has the Has Nation’s Sixth Highest Foreclosure Rate.

I am working on trying to get a system of proportiional representation which woulg gave us more power than runing in the two party crooked system. And by the way you said that Not that I think Lamont would be bad for the state, but because DeStefano is involved with his campaign. There are people in malloy camp who are for DeStefano. Also some of those same people in the picture was against you when you was in office.I am going to say it again we shouls run for any any political position,But with people of color who have there own party and not depend on the Democratic or Republican party.

Could there be a better illustration of the old adage “politics makes strange bedfellows?”
Sal Brancati and Bill Dyson? Nick Balleto and Darnell Goldson?
Its a paen to the power of John DeStefano to bring people together. These pictures made my day!

I don’t agree with the premise of this article. I support the mayor in local politics, but I support Malloy in the race for governor. I don’t associate myself with most of the Malloy supporters highlighted in this article. And if there is a large New Haven vote for Malloy in the primary, I don’t believe that will reflect on Mayor DeStefano. Not everything that happens in Connecticut politics is about the Mayor of New Haven.
posted by: Exiled Italian Shill on July 14, 2010 5:42pm
Malloy is the better choice not because DeStefano backs Lamont, but because he has a better grasp of policy and management as a big city mayor.
When people say, “I’m backing Malloy because King John is with Ned,” they do a disservice to all that Malloy brings to the table as the next governor.
Now as for the makeup of the crowd its like the old adage says “you are judged by the strength of your opponent.”

Brancati is still very much a DeStefano man. He was probably at this event to spy on what was going on. A photo to damage the Malloy campaign was just a lucky bonus.

Dear Mr. Jenkins,{...}Your comments are very well taken. I was in such confusion as to who to support but I am leaning toward Lamont..Seeing Jackie James as HQ leader, pushed me into the Lamont camp…This is a woman who has NO business being in politics. She has done NOTHING to improve the quality of life for Hill residents. If Malloy thinks she is good then I sincerely question his judgement…

I too find this interesting politics. As a former Destefano “guy” and someone who always found himself on the other side of the people mentioned in this article… I see Malloy’s campaign too important to take up “old” political stands. I say its this kind of race that clears history and makes a new start for the people to take control of our State. Go Malloy. I just can’t wait to see people’s faces when I walk in the door someday down at campaign headquarters.

Dear Amused, you obviously have not walked Alderwoman James ward! She has done a great deal in that community.
Crime is at an alltime low due to her setting standards and expectations for the police and the residents. Also, habitat is building 10 new houses. Steven Street is being redeveloped and a 30 million dollard development is being done on Syl van Ave. This community is growing due to development and the workof Alderwoman James. Alderwoman James also hold events in regards to quality of life issues. Very prominent people hav e begun moving into this community.
You obviously don’t know her! She also address the personal needs of her residents when they are hungary, homeless, unemployed, abused, etc.
To you and others; before you speak spend a day with her in her ward. Just because she doesn’t bragg or publicize everything does not mean she’s not working! Ask the police officers, teachers and other new homeowners that just moved in the ward. Also, we really don’t care what you say. We live here you obviously don’t!

Vladamir , Read the history of how skin color mattering was and is still used to support the political system, and disenfranchisement of others, better yet research about the people who aren’t your color i take it, and see what role whites have played in their freedom , rights, and conditions in America both past and present especially when we as you stated “Put on the gloves and get in the game"then you will know what skin color has to do with it. Its one thing to be an African American and color not matter until your treated a certain way because of it socially, economically.

Dear Amused,
I beg the differ in regards to your comments in reference to Alderwoman James. Your Alderwoman is exactly what your community is in need of. She stands up and opposes the inept DeStefano Administration when they fail to address the needs of her constituents. YOU! If anyone is to blame, you must aim at Yale and DeStefano for not recognizing the plight.
However, it appears as though someone is finally listening and observing the very things in which you speak. For example: the current economic development that is in works. Don’t take this personal, but what are you doing to help her achieve the very things in which you’re concerned with? Being a good alderman is a difficult job, that only pays you enough to fill up your gas tank. But in fairness, I was appalled with Alderwoman James when she bowed out of the Board Presidents position at the last minute. You fight to the end.Especially if your intent was to steer an economic agenda in the direction of those who need it most. So change your mind Amused, if not for her, do it for me.

Sal Brancati is a good man.
“He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.” In life, we have all made mistakes. But to keep someone in purgatory because of error in judgment, is also a sin on your part. If your plan is to get to Heaven, then you need to allow Jesus to do the judging, not you. For after all, that’s His job, not yours.

Mr. Jenkins wasn’t Brancati the guy that just a few years ago was cooking up a scheme with alderman smart to have the state’s trash load hauled through the residential streets of Wooster Square?
Nice guy? Try deal maker at any cost. Wonder what he was promised by Malloy through Ed Markus?

Hmmm…. if you really want to get rid of Destefano as mayor of New Haven, you should be supporting Lamont, because rumor has it that if elected he’ll give Destefano his pick of commissioner-level jobs in Hartford - OPM, DECD, etc. If Malloy wins you’ve pretty much locked in a Destefano 10th term.

May be to you he may be a good man.But to some of us who live here we have to look at his action.
Brancati Agrees To Give Back $15K
Former city dealmaker Sal Brancati (pictured) and a business partner have agreed to give back $15,000 of proceeds they made on the sale of an East Rock widow’s home — money that was supposed to go towards a fund for “crippled children.”
Fell free to read the rest.
http://www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/2007/09/brancati_agrees.php
Rember also the bible that you follow say God hates a lying tongue.Acts 5:1-11
5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,
2 and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back some of the price of the land?
4 “While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.”
Notice I said your Bible,Do to the fact that that is you belief which you have a right to.
If your plan is to get to Heaven, then you need to allow Jesus to do the judging, not you. For after all, that’s His job, not yours.
Again who are you to say that a person needs Jesus to get in to heaven.Sounds to me you are doing the judging as to who can go to heaven. Also every one does not follow Jesus and no one has a monopoly on the word of god.

Let me see if I understand this: If Malloy becomes governor, all state dealings with New Haven will be filtered through the ill-feelings of a handful of anti-DeStefano residents who will become the de facto government of the city? Is Malloy saying that he’ll have nothing to do with DeStefano or City Hall?
Is this what we have to look forward to in a Malloy administration? Government by vendetta? If that’s what Malloy meant, God help us.
You have to wonder what other towns in the state have incurred the wrath of Malloy and are in for a royal screwing when he takes office.

[Note: Thanks for your comments. If you read the comments section, you’ll notice there are plenty of comments critical of the DeStefano administration (ever read anything by Doyens, etc?) but, while we make mistakes sometimes by publishing stuff that shouldn’t get in, we work hard to adhere to a strict policy against name-calling, harsh personal attacks, libel, etc. See our policies here: ]http://newhavenindependent.org/index.php/site_policies/]
