A thief plays an inadvertent starring role in a video — leading the cops to ask for the public’s help in tracking him down.
The thief crept out in the middle of an October night and slipped into a courtyard of a downtown residential tower. He brought along bolt cutters.
He spent 12 minutes whacking at Kryptonite U‑locks, chains and tires attached to dozens of parked bicycles.
Unbeknownst to him, he was doing so in full view of a security camera.
The man had little luck. He couldn’t break through the U‑locks. He left, returned a couple of times, and finally made off with one entire previously chained bike and a couple of unprotected tires.
Police have been looking for the man since he pulled off the caper, which began at 3:52 a.m. on Oct. 5. They haven’t found him yet.
Downtown Officer Dan Hartnett (pictured; read of some of his exploits here and here) is handling the case. He asks people to watch the video at the top of this story, take a good look at the thief, and then contact the police with any information. (Call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or email Hartnett’s district manager .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).)
Note: We have sped the video up ten times so you can easily watch the whole episode.
The fact that this is a poor quality video-held by an unsteady hand-of a poor quality video being played on another device coupled with the silly music suggest to me that you really aren't serious about us helping to try to find the culprit. Feels like you're making light of a real issue. Disappointing...
