John Daniels Saluted

Daniels’ City Hall portrait was decorated in the wake of his death.

The New Haven Board of Alders expressed” its deep regret” Monday night over the passing of New Haven’s first black mayor, John C. Daniels.

The board unanimously approved a resolution citing Daniels’ successes as a mayor — instituting community policing and a needle-exchange program, for instance — as well as a ground-breaking role model.

Daniels started out from humble beginnings as a little boy growing up in New Haven’s old Elm Haven housing project, rising through the ranks” to serve as alderman, state senator and mayor, the resolution notes.

Daniels died Saturday at the age of 78. Click here for a story about that and about his career.
