LEAP College Tour Hits Widener, Coppin State

A campus club director had advice for the traveling students: You’re the author. You’re the finisher. You’re the artist. You color it. You shape it.”

New Haven high-school students heard that advice this week during a February-break tour of college campuses.

The 45 students on the trip all work for LEAP, the academic and recreation program based on Jefferson Street. Each year LEAP takes high-schoolers on the tour to help them on their way to college careers. They are traveling under the direction of six chaperones, under the tutelage of LEAP Youth Development Director Elvert Eden. He’s at left in the photo with Career High junior Deja Scott, Hillhouse High School senior Forel Kourouma, and Wilbur Cross sophomore Nicholas Mayne.

The students sent in videos and write-ups about what they saw and heard during a stop at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. The video at the top of the story captures advice they received from the club director.

New Haven’s Tyler Lipscomb got the advice from one undergrad …

… while more advice came from students approached by the door to their dorm room.

Forel Kourouma’s impressions: Widener University is a private liberal institution located in Chester, Pennsylvania. The annual cost of the college amounts to roughly $51,000, however, the average student receives about $23,000 in scholarship grant. Widener admission only considers applicants’ transcript, SAT scores and community service activities. Unlike most universities and colleges, Widener does not look at recommendations. They are only interested in what the applicant did in high school. Widener is a beautiful university with memorable statues surrounding it. The university has beautiful views from the dorms, cafeteria, and other sections of the college. There are fresh green grasses surrounding the school which indicates that the school cares about the environment and global warming.”

The group also visited Coppin State University in Baltimore. Nicholas Mayne reported that he had a great time” there: The presentation was good, and learning about the admission process was new for me. If I maintain my current grades and score well on my SATs, I’ll have the opportunity to attend this school. The campus wasn’t too big, and I can walk around the entire campus quickly. The buildings and sports complex were nice, the students were very friendly, and tuition is about $11,000 (not including room and board).”
