Fair Haven second-graders will read about a precocious kid who loves reading and overcomes obstacles in her life, thanks to a grant to a local theater.

First Niagara Foundation just made the $150,000 grant to the Shubert Theater. The grant will support several efforts:

• Distribution of copies of the book Matilda (she of the precocity) to Fair Haven School second-graders and all public-school libraries in town.
• Sponsorship of the Shubert production of Matilda The Musical from May 16 – 23.
• A match for ongoing Shubert fundraising.
• A donation to the Shubert’s Centennial Plan. (The theater turned 100 this year.)
