Alston.

Without notifying the public, the city swore in a new fire chief Monday.

The new chief, John Alston Jr., has not yet been confirmed by the Board of Alders.

So he was sworn in on an acting basis at City Hall.

The board’s Aldermanic Affairs Committee voted unanimously on Sept. 29 to approve his appointment, which was recommended by Mayor Toni. Harp. (Click here to read about that.) The full board must now approve his appointment.

A small private ceremony was planned in deference to the Board of Alders and its confirmation process, which remains in process,” said mayoral spokesman Laurence Grotheer. A formal swearing-in ceremony will be planned after the full board acts.”

Why the swearing-in on an acting basis? Grotheer said it was important to make sure the fire department had someone running it. The acting chief Matthew Marcarelli, resigned the week before last. And, he said, Chief Alston is eager to get to work.”
