If you stopped into a local synagogue Wednesday night or Thursday morning, you may well have encountered a Cookie Monster or a giant M&M chanting prayers or reading from a Hebrew-language scroll.
That’s because it’s Purim, a merry-making Jewish holiday with a serious message about stopping genocide. It’s also a reverse-Halloween of sorts, with people dressing in costume and distributing boxes of candy as well as donating to the poor.
At the Yeshiva of New Haven at Elm and Norton Streets, Menachem Greer (in top photo) donned a maritime-themed costume as he chanted the Megillah, the biblical Book of Esther. His fellow congregants are pictured below in their own costumes.
