No More Ridiculous Hearings” For Randy Salvatore

Developer Randy Salvatore made it official Thursday: He will not attend any more public meetings to negotiate terms to build a new housing/retail/lab/office project in the Hill neighborhood. He will not see any modifications.

He did say that if the Board of Alders reverses course and votes to approve the deal as it stood before a committee vote altered it Wednesday, then I will reconsider.”

Following is the full text of an email message Salvatore sent Thursday to city Livable city Initiative (LCI) Executive Director Serena Neal-Sanjurjo:

I am not spending any more time or money on this project or attending any more of these ridiculous hearings, and I have told Carolyn Kone that she is not authorized to spend any more time (or my money) speaking to anyone going forward.

If the Board chooses to approve the submitted documents, without any amendments whatsoever for eliminating parcels or making the Developer return to the board for various modifications as they hinted at last night, then I will reconsider. Otherwise, I am out. I will not attend, nor have any of my legal representatives attend additional any hearings or meetings going forward – I spent the past 2 years doing that.

I was entirely betrayed by the Board of Alders from the top down. Six months ago, I reluctantly returned to the project based on assurances from the Board leadership; I did everything that they asked, and agreed to far more than any Developer would ever agree to and was assured by Tyisha as recently as 2 days ago that there was unanimous support for this project as presented. What happened last night should be an embarrassment to the City and everyone associated with it. As a businessman, I will move onto my next deal and City. Unfortunately for New Haven and this particular neighborhood, these parcels will remain as-is for many years to come, and I believe any future real estate developers will be hard pressed to look at New Haven in general.

Thanks for your time and effort — I enjoyed working with you. Clearly, I know that you and your team always had the best interests of New Haven at heart.
