Manchester-Related Threat
Leads To SciPark Arrest

After a workplace shooting left nine people dead in Manchester, a worker in New Haven said he understood the shooter’s mindset,” according to police.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

At 11:14 a.m. Wednesday, police were notified by security officers of a threatening complaint at Science Park. They were told that an employee had referred to the Manchester shooting and said that he understood the shooter’s mindset.” Police detained the suspect, a 58-year-old from Derby. After interviewing witnesses, police charged the man with a breach of peace. No weapon was found at the scene.

In other police news according to Avery:

Witnesses told police Wednesday of a 5:05 p.m. shootout between two men on the porch of 59 Elizabeth St. in Newhallville and a man on a bike in the street. The two men ran into 59 Elizabeth St., where police found them hiding in an apartment with a teenager. The occupant of the apartment did not want them there. A 9mm handgun was found in a hallway on the second floor. The two men, both from Hamden, were arrested for trespassing and interfering with police. A 14-year-old was also arrested, for trespassing.

On Thursday morning at 6 a.m., police responded to a report of a person shot near Church and Crown streets. They found a 26-year-old Waterbury man suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot. He told police he had been shot during a mugging on Chapel Street between Kensington and Orchard streets. The mugger took his wallet and then shot him in the foot without reason. The victim gave detectives conflicting accounts of the incident.

Papito Gets 70 Months

The Connecticut U.S. Attorney announced that West Havener Robert Papito” Calo was sentenced Thursday to 70 months in prison for his role in a New Haven-based heroin distribution ring. He was also given three years of supervised release after his prison sentence.

The sentencing is part of Operation Oceanfront,” a long-term investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and several local police departments.

According to court documents and statements, Papito allowed the drug ring to use his former residence at 92 Kensington St. to store, process, and package heroin. Papito also brought in customers and acted as a middleman between dealers and customers.
