Summer Reading
Challenge Charges Up

New Haven public library intern Chelsea Gizzi sent in this write-up about the library’s Summer Reading Challenge:

Dive into a great read and take the 2010 Summer Reading Challenge at the library!

Once again, the New Haven Free Public Library is challenging kids and teens to keep up with their reading during summer vacation. This isn’t just a chance to find some really great stories, though. It’s also an opportunity to win some exciting prizes, like this flash drive!

Here’s how it’s done: For teens each book, magazine, audio book, or newspaper is worth a point. Books longer than 250 pages are worth two points. After earning eight points, you get your prize. Theoretically, you only have to read four books.

Some suggestions: The Book Thief (Markus Zuzak), The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing (M.T. Anderson), The Secret Life of Bees (Sue Monk Kidd), and Trickster’s Choice (Tamora Pierce).

When you’re not reading, there’s also a diverse selection of Summer Programs for teens at both the main and branch libraries, ranging from Wii Wednesdays to Decorate Your Own Cupcake sessions.

For more information and program locations, check out our Facebook page YA @ the New Haven Free Public Library or check out the events calendar on our library website. Or feel free to call or e‑mail the Young Adult Librarian, Sunnie at 203 – 946-8130 or [email protected]. You could even stop by the library (133 Elm Street) and check out a book after you pick up a program schedule!
