Miss Hare Returns

Sylvia Hare and Principal Barry Herman with Winchester students, circa 1975. A reunion’s coming up, as a beloved stalwart of the old Winchester School (now Wexler/Grant) returns to town.

Sylvia Hare was Winchester ‘s guiding light of love to all children for 34 years. Miss Hare’s compassion and dedication to each child throughout the Dixwell community were a constant means for encouragement and success.  Her tiny office near the gym was a sanctuary for many.

Miss Hare is 84 years old living with her daughter, Afua in Houston, Texas.  Her desire has been to come home and visit with those “special children”, now adults.

Saturday, April 26, has been dedicated as “Miss Sylvia Hare Day.” The Elks Club on Webster Street will open its doors from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. for all to share in their fond memories with Miss Hare.

For more information call Afua at (713) 643-9433 or Tom Morrissey at (203) 699-9252.

She was great during time at Winchester, so was Barry Herman.

I remember all the trophies Winchester won. They even had the best uniform at one time, Red, White and Blue.
