Toddler Critical After Fall From 2nd-Story Window

A 16-month-old boy was in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital after falling out of a second-story window, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sherman Avenue, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman. Three separate witnesses reported that the boy was pushing on a closed screen, and the screen gave way. One of the witnesses, who was on the street at the time, tried without success to catch the falling boy. The boy and his mother were visiting a friend of the mother in the apartment.

Meanwhile, a fire at a two-family home on Cedar Hill Avenue Saturday left a family homeless; the American Red Cross came to assist them. Outside of a firefighter who had to be treated for smoke inhalation, no one was injured.
