Sunset Sunday

Here’s the thing about predictions. They are just that. Three to 6 inches of snow were predicted last night at 6 p.m. and now that’s risen to 5 to 9 inches. Heavy snow, which may rise to near-blizzard conditions, is expected to continue along shoreline throughout the afternoon. Tides are expected to be about 2 – 1/2 feet above normal (high tide was at 10:45 a.m.).

Thus far the snow is light and fluffy as opposed to the wet, heavy snow from last week. The town’s plow trucks are clearing the roads.

Driving conditions will be treacherous. All Branford schools are closed today and tonight.

The National Weather Service has now announced that the heavy snow and wind has risen to a winter storm warning in effect until 6 p.m. tonight. All of New Haven County comes under this warning. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected and temperatures will fall to the 20s, starting around noon.

Visibility is poor and car travel may be dangerous. The weather service is asking drivers who must travel to keep food, water and an extra flashlight in their cars in case of an emergency.

Strong winds may well bring down tree limbs and power lines, the weather service says.

We will have updates.
