After two consecutive loses to open the 2015 baseball season, the Branford Hornets defeated East Haven on Saturday for their first win of the season.

Coach Ed Bethke talks to freshman Damien Maniscalco about sacrificing to move the runners up.

It was great to get the monkey off our back”, said Hornet coach Ed Bethke.

Maniscalco lays down a perfect bunt to advance the runners.

We haven’t beaten East Haven in two years, so to start the spring break week off with our first win, first divisional win, gives us huge momentum going into this week,” the coach said.

He wasn’t his best but he battled, grinded it out and put it on his back to guide us to our first victory of the season. We’re expecting big things from him.”

A combination of East Haven walks by starting pitcher Antonio Cancel, and a few Eastie fielding miscues led Branford to score all their runs in the first three innings.

Junior Devin Derenzo slams a long double that scored two runs in the fifth inning.
