After two consecutive loses to open the 2015 baseball season, the Branford Hornets defeated East Haven on Saturday for their first win of the season.
“It was great to get the monkey off our back”, said Hornet coach Ed Bethke.
“We haven’t beaten East Haven in two years, so to start the spring break week off with our first win, first divisional win, gives us huge momentum going into this week,” the coach said.
Senior Dan Driscoll (pictured) went the distance for Branford giving up only two runs on five hits. “Driscoll pitched a very solid game”, said Bethke. He wasn’t his best but he battled, grinded it out and put it on his back to guide us to our first victory of the season. We’re expecting big things from him.”
A combination of East Haven walks by starting pitcher Antonio Cancel, and a few Eastie fielding miscues led Branford to score all their runs in the first three innings.
Junior Devin Derenzo (pictured) highlighted a five run third inning with a bases loaded double to deep center that knocked in 2 of the 5 runs the Hornets scored in the third. Sophomore DH Ross Prior followed with another double scoring two more.
Branford’s next home game is against Career today at 11 a.m.
