Lonnie Reed Qualifies for Campaign Public Financing

With Permission

State Rep. Lonnie Reed.

State Representative Lonnie Reed (D‑102) has met the qualifying number of small donations to participate in Connecticut’s Citizen Election Program, she announced today.

In just under 90 days, we’ve reached our goal for fundraising,” she said. I am so grateful to all of the small donors who supported me in this effort. I also welcome their ongoing input and advice, which helps me continue to tackle the very important and difficult work we have in this legislative session,” she said.

Reed, who represents most of Branford (excluding the Stony Creek and Pine Orchard areas) needed to raise a minimum 150 small donations of under $100 totaling $5,000 in order to receive a public grant of $25,000 to fund her campaign for re-election. She is seeking a fifth term in office.

The Citizen’s Election Program has been a great success for Democratic and Republican candidates alike,” she stated. The program goal of taking big money out of politics has worked, but even more so, it has made just a five dollar donation vital to the process.”

Reed, who is the chair of the Energy & Technology Committee and a member of the Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee, will be formally nominated by Branford Democrats at a convention on May 18.

Reed said that in this difficult budget year, legislators will be forced to make hard decisions regarding programs that will likely be cut, not only affecting those benefiting from the programs, but also the state employees providing many of them.”

She said she is fighting for several other initiatives for Branford. They include large- scale clean energy opportunities to help Branford municipal buildings save on electricity costs; a Shared Solar program that permits neighbors to team up to make solar affordable and available for many more ratepayers; bond funding for key local projects; and more state education funding for Branford’s public schools.
