Barbara Lipsitz Geller (Baldwin) passed away peacefully Sunday Aug. 30th, surrounded by her family.
We are grateful for the wonderful hospice care she received from Branford Hospice, and we thank those who have supported the family through this trying time. Barbara was born May 9th, 1944, in Brooklyn NY to Jack and Estelle Lipsitz. She led a life full of adventure, living in New York, Vancouver, Memphis, Washington D.C., various areas of Connecticut, and most importantly, New Haven.
Barbara worked passionately throughout her life for congressmen, mayors, the War on Poverty, the Connecticut Department of Mental Health, and the Peabody Museum, among many others. She recently retired as the Director of Statewide Services for the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
Barbara is survived by her husband Thayer Baldwin, and her children Sadra, Jacob, Jamie and Bill, Caitlin and Rachael, Chris and Margie, and Teo and Suzy. Barbara was an extremely proud grandmother of Zeph, Cenzo, David, Giancarlo, Eli and Isabella, Jordan, Priscilla, and Roger. Barbara is also survived by her brother Lou, and her niece Anne and family. There are too many to name who have shared adventures with Barbara through the years, but her life would not have been as much fun without dear friends Richard, Joanne, Shelby, Joyce, Tina, Mary and Meg.
Services will be held at Yale Hillel (Slifka Center) Wednesday September 2nd, 9:30am. Following the services we will sit shiva at the house and welcome visitors 12 – 5 p.m. (276 Marvelwood Rd). Thursday September 3rd we will also sit shiva and we welcome visitors 4pm-8pm.
Barbara felt very strongly that she did not want flowers. To continue her work in giving voice to those who are not heard, contributions can be made in Barbara’s honor through the Barbara Lipsitz Geller Fund of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven
