A trailblazer known as New Haven’s “Mother Teresa” died early Thursday.
We lost a pioneer, AIDS activist, community leader and former public schoolteacher, in Elsie Cofield.
Mrs. Cofield was the wife of the late Dr. Curtis Cofield, senior pastor of the Immanuel Baptist Church in New Haven.
Mrs. Cofield and her husband were the founders of AIDS Interfaith Network in the Elm City, which started in the basement of the church. Mrs. Cofield built up the organization and ran it for many years.
She passed peacefully in her sleep Thursday at 12:15 a.m. Last week, she just celebrated her 92nd birthday.
Mrs. Cofield made a difference in the lives of many in our city and country and when no one wanted to talk about AIDS in the black community. Mrs. Cofield not only talked about the virus, she lobbied from the capitol to DC and even to Africa. (The family has a picture with her and President Clinton.)
She also gave those living with the virus a warm meal and a safe space every day at AIDS Interfaith Network. Plus, a hug when no one wanted to touch someone living with AIDSor HIV.
A wake will take place Friday, March 25, from noon to 4 p.m., at Immanuel Baptist Church. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, March 26: viewing from 9 to 10 a.m., funeral service from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will take place at the Beaverdale cemetery across Southern Connecticut State University.

Saddened to see the end of an era, yet somewhat comforted at the thought that Mrs. Cofield is "…going home [not only] to live with God…", but also with her beloved husband the late Rev. Dr. Curtis Cofield II. For, the two lived their lives setting the highest standard of exemplary leadership, activism, compassion and humanity. They did so at home, (here in New Haven), across the country as well as abroad!
