Laura Patton, 85

Laura Elizabeth Boyd Patton, age 85, departed this life on Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

Laura was born on September 15, 1925, in New Haven, CT daughter of the late Charles and Josephine Lawrence Boyd. Laura was predeceased by her first husband Lee Van Foreman, Sr. and second husband Richard Patton. She was the mother of Eugene J. Foreman, Sr. of Maryland, Richard Patton of West Haven and Scott Patton of Hamden. She was predeceased by one son Lee Van Foreman, Jr. of Danville, VA. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Theresa (Barry) Murphy of Danville, VA; Deborah (Derwood) Connor of Grimesland, NC; April (Kenneth) McCoter of Raleigh, NC; Lee (Sherice) Foreman, III of East Haven, CT; Eugene J. Foreman, Jr., Asia and Knyah Patton of New Haven, CT. She also leaves five great-grandchildren James Evans, Paul Thompson, Kiara Hubert, Emerald and Diamond Foreman along with her daughters-in-law, Sherdena Foreman of Danville and Veronica Foreman of New Haven. Laura leaves behind a host of special friends and relatives. The family would especially like to thank a special dear friend Sheila Jenkins for her compassion and kindness. Laura was a devoted member of Dixwell Avenue Congregation United Church of Christ since 1940. She served as Treasurer of the Deacon’s Board, Secretary of Women’s Fellowship and member of the Senior Choir. She was a member of the Dixwell Senior Club, African American Women’s Agenda and the Greater New Haven Chapter of the NAACP. She retired from the State of Connecticut, Department of Income Maintenance as an Adult Case Supervisor, where she worked for 18 years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church (Tree of Life) in memory of Deacon Laura E. Patton. A celebration of Laura’s life will be held Friday, September 9, 2011, at Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 242 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven, CT.
