Is this the record tying homicide for the most in a year in New Haven?

when's the last time you saw a new haven cop walking the beat?

and we're at #32?

They're stacking up about as fast as DeStefano changes his staff.

Looks like the gun buy-back did not help this man....

There were 34 homicides in 1991 and around 350 shootings.

So far this year we have 32 homicides and a little over 100 shootings.

How will cops walking a beat effect anything? I'll tell you, in a negative way. You have X amount of cops spread so thinly they can barely cover the overwhelming volume of calls they have as it is. Then you take X amount of cops and shrink it to Y (because cops don't grow on trees). Who will go to these murder scenes, let alone be in the right place at the right time to stop it. New Haven needs to come together as a group of mature adults and start speaking to the police, "if you see something, say something". Police can't do anything without the assistance of their community, you are their strength.

When is this going to end? How long do residents of New Haven have to endure this and feel they are not safe anytime, morning-noon-night! No boundaries on this, none at all, no matter where your neighborhood is. Sick and tired of this and my heart bleeds for all the families for all their losses.

I have to agree somewhat with your logic but disagree in regards to cops walking the beat.Right now you don't have beat cops that may or may not help.In either case if you have beat cops,you have more direct interaction with the troubled neighborhoods. It is proven that people will be more likely to convey ongoing information to them than to call the PD and have a cruiser come by.They don't want flags raised in front of the perps who seem to have a need for this violence.Any information conveyed to the beat guys,that maybe helps prevents the violence and saves lives is worth the OT cost for them to be there.Right now people don't want to come forward to patrol units because they don't want a billboard advertising what they are doing.Many live in fear.The beat guys may help to change that..Hopefully for all !!

Trying to make sense of man's inhumanity to man, is a losing proposition. Guns make it easy to take a life; calloused human indifference and ignorance make it easy to pull the trigger. One can only hope that those who cheapen life, are themselves, subject to cosmic justice in one form or another.

The odds? Well.. based on the population of New Haven, this year one out of every 4,000 people in this city got murdered.

James, the odds don't seem very meaningful when you apply them to the whole population. Nationally, the odds of being shot and killed in a homicide are about 1 in 1,000 every year for young black men, but about 1 in 50,000 for most other groups. These odds are roughly similar in New Haven depending what years and neighborhoods you look at.
