Cop ​“Dashes” Back To New Haven

This is a good story. I look forward to reading more about this officers contributions to the force and the New Haven community. Thank you Officer Dash (and all the officers that choose to stay) for choosing us.

Love of the community? I doubt it , more like sleep deprivation at the Academy from marching around the floors at 2 o'clock in the morning . On top of a full days schedule of classes

I smell Snake-Oil and Three Card Monte with this.He left a state troop job which paid more money?

I hope he hung on to his kevlar. Crime is up. And I hope he enjoys watching women and children demonstrating for lost causes while standing on his feet for long hours through boring and unnecessary speeches.

Well, I'm proud to say that Threefifths and I finally agree on one thing - this story is snake oil and three card monte. No one leaves a state job with higher pay, better benefits and better working conditions.

Maybe NHI will get to the bottom of this story?

Did you cynical people ever think he missed working in New Haven as being the truth? State and Municipal policing is very different, but you would actually have to be a cop to know or understand this. To good cops, the money is secondary. I guess though you guys have loved every job you've ever had and have never made a mistake. Pardon me. Welcome back and Good Luck Officer Dash.

All the policing experts at the NHI. Who cares why he wants to come back. If he was a good cop and a good person, why not take him back?

So here we have a good-hearted cop who decided that he wants to work someplace he loves rather than make the money he needs to start a family.

Shame on us all for forcing our officers to make that choice. We, and they, deserve better.

He came back because of his "love for the community". And what has he done for the community outside his mandated and paid work assignment? At least they know they can leave and come back. Most employers would not allow that. There's no way the decision to leave was not fully discussed beforehand with his family. Bull. What's the real story behind the return?

Maybe this copper was perceptive enough to realize, even prior to actually joining them, the profound corruption within CT State Troopers. To me that's a plus.

From what I understand, the CT State Police academy is similar to Marine Corps boot camp, and many instructors are former marines.

Dash is a great cop. CSP, town, and city police all have their own different styles; it isnt like there is a universal fit. I was a cop for 5 years in a suburban town and didn't enjoy it so I transferred here. I see no need to second guess his decision. When we've already lost dozens of good cops to other PDs the city should be thrilled he chose to come back.

New Haven cops make 40 grand for the first two years and 48 the third year with minimal health benefits and no pension . So obviously he didn't come back for those perks More like what I previously posted. I know a person in the Post Academy class right now which is totally different from the State Police Academy and this person told me that all night the State recruits are marching around the hallways chanting. Thats why when they graduate from their Academy they're basically robots and anyone that has worked with any of them will tell you that. But then again if you talk to a Trooper they'll tell you that they're held to a higher standard. They get paid real well to investigate deer strikes and accidents They really don't know how to be Cops until the work with City guys .But that's just my opinion. 👮‍♂️👮🏾‍♀️

Lots of people choose a less financially rewarding job for a more emotionally rewarding job. (Didn't Paul Bass turn down a NYT editor-in-chief offer to stay at NHI?) Considering how much time we spend at work, it makes sense to choose happiness over money. For those wanting a fast paced environment, a variety of assignments and the opportunity to advance to leadership quickly New Haven may be one of the best places. Many suburban departments offer the opportunity to drive in circles, write tickets for expired registrations, and deal with an ossified command structure. Some officers spend twenty years or more and never advance from patrol. On the other hand, a friend of mine at NHPD rotated jobs too quickly to adjust sleep wise, from various patrol shifts, to bike patrol & bike instructor, to special task forces. At times, he was the senior man on a shift with three years experience, having reached sergeant. As Christian says, different departments will have different styles and paces, from NHPD, not just between cities and suburbs, but between towns as well. An officer who might be happy in Madison might be unhappy in Branford, and vice versa.

After reading 1644 's last post it just goes to show how inexperienced the New Haven Police Dept is , You have a 3 year veteran being the senior person on a shift and at 3 years this person is made a Sergeant , that's unbelievable ! There is no way a 3 year veteran should be allowed to take a Sergent's test or any promotional exam for that matter when they can just about make a decision for themselves let alone supervise others. Years ago you were lucky to get a regular car beat after your probationary period of 2 years . Now you can be a Sergeant at 3 years on the job that's just mind boggling .

Ozzie: you need 4 years from date of hire to take the detectives test and 5 to take the sergeant's test. However, you're right that there is a decreasing number of veteran officers. The older officers are retiring and newer ones are leaving in droves because benefits were slashed in the last contract, leaving us with a multi-tier mess.

That contract expired last June and the city and union have been in negotiations since. If you think the situation is bad now, just wait: a large portion of the pd are holding their breath, at all ranks. If there are no improvements there will be a huge exodus that will severely impact not only patrol but the detectives and supervisors. The next big wave of retirees will be by June 30 and we'll see how many newer officers leave by then as well.

Going by what was posted , but even at 4 and 5 years some cops don't even know the streets without a map , let alone make critical decisions

I Amy be wrong about his length of time. I do know he seemed to change jobs every three months. He was not particularly young, being a USMC veteran. I think the time he was the senior guy on the shift may have been a one-time thing, but I do remember it because he remarked to me that it was ridiculous that some one with his experience was the senior guy on a shift. This was about two years ago, and he said all the old guys were retiring due to changes in the retirement plan.Overall, the department seems very young. With any organization, its important to have a good distribution of experience, both the old geezers (Yoda-types), young eager beavers, and journeymen. Every so often, the military tweeks its compensation and retention policies to ensure the right distribution of experienced personnel. Enlistment and re-emlistment bonuses are used for specific skill sets to keep needed people until they are too close to the 20 year mark to throw it all away.

Just looking at the level on ingratitude, the residents of New Haven WONDER why people leave the city in droves. Gauging by the level of disrespect coming from these posts, one can only imagine what the citizens put the officers through on a daily basis. I can't imagine why the officers leave?!

The City should be happy any officer stays. The better residents of this city will be angry once they see less patrols due to the problems that will arise because the current civil service list is fraught with corruption.

What's not reported here is that a supervisor left the department after being involved in a company that was going to "rubber stamp" the candidates psychological check so they're hired. Once again, the Special Interests are handing out jobs to their friends and cronies.

So "the Department" bungled the search for help with the psych exam. But as a taxpayer, I believe we are specifically entitled to know WHO bungled it. I wonder if we can get some of that body cam footage the police were bragging about on the news:
"We believe our officers are doing the right thing, but [the cameras] are going to help with transparency," Assistant Chief Racheal Cain added. "We are a community-based agency, and it's important for the public to be able to see exactly what the officers are doing, and this will help with that."

Hopefully Rachel Cain can help the misinformed and over-taxed taxpayers understand where $75,000 dollars were wasted with the help of all that new footage!

Part 2

Two picks for evaluations- one reputed, one unheard of...c'mon, although I was born yesterday, this doesn't even pass my fish-smell test. This sounds a lot like the Whitefish Energy Company that was supposed to restore power to Puerto Rico. Two employee company. I'm sure there's no corruption here, though! Ah, yes. and one is connected to the Department to help funnel money into a "rubber stamp" account like a banana republic!

And Chief Campbell...yeah, let's talk about this.

"Chief Anthony Campbell said he sought changes in the selection of psychiatric exam administrators as part of an effort to recruit more cops of color to the force."
We should be testing for decency and rational decision making. But admitting publicly you're changing the exam for those reasons sounds like reverse racism to me. I'm not exactly sure the City is going to be able to defend this when people not of "color" sue the City for discrimination. I mean, probably not the smartest thing to do, admitting it publicly!

"Our ultimate goal is to make this department more reflective of this city, make it a more fair and equitable process for everyone" . Well, Chief, the NHPD is making the process inherently unequal because stated preference from above. The process reminds me of Brown vs Board of Ed. Inherently unequal. If there is a qualified white candidate, they may lose out. And the city wonders why they get sued.

I can just see the lawsuit, now. People not hired band together and collectively hire a lawyer to sue the City. During pre-trial discovery, some of the files of the hired applicants are reviewed. Then all their dirt comes out like Tide pod struck them! Illegal activities with nefarious characters, drugs usage, sales, etc. The lawyers, finding the dirt, then pursue a full trial knowing scandal will embarrass the City and cost them money. And then, they happily walk away with their 1/3.

I can only imagine what other candidates are being greased through the back doors on this one. Maybe the Independent can put in an FOI request before we hire more people who committed felonies. I can only imagine the dirt being hidden to hookup some city friends. And what is going to happen when one of them messes up? Oh, yeah, the City is going to get sued. Yay! More lawsuits!

Wow, New Haven, just wow. It's like the City is begging to be sued! I wonder which hands are going to be greased.

The City should have an outside agency vet the candidates and review their files before we hire them. The taxpayers of this City get screwed every-day. We get no accountability. Instead, it's all excuses from the top. When the cooker gets hot, another "replacement" comes in, helps "their people" and the ferris wheel keeps rolling at the circus. All under the cloak of "cleaning house".

But, the Department needs to "hand out those badges soon". City of New Haven, folks.

Let's "hand out" badges, guns, and more lawsuits. The pending taser lawsuit is only the beginning folks! On top of losing a 3rd of the candidates to other towns!

And yet, all the keyboard jockeys can talk about, Dash getting rehired. Someone who is legitimately qualified and not rubber stamped through the door.
