The police arrested a 31-year-old man Saturday on charges of having murdered a 35-year-old man the day before outside the Exxon convenience station at Whalley Avenue and Fitch Street.
They charged the arrestee, a convicted felon out on parole, with murder, criminal possession of a pistol without a permit, and violation of probation, in connection with the Friday 3:08 a.m. shooting of Kenneth Nathaniel Cooper.
Police obtained a warrant for the man’s arrest. Then Officer Paul Vitale, while on his beat, spotted the suspect, and was able to take him into custody without incident with the help of other patrol officers, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.
Kenneth Cooper, who used to live in New Haven, lived in Waterbury at the time he was shot. A woman he was with at the Exxon station drove him from the scene to the hospital, where he later died, Hartman said.
“Neither the victim or the woman he was with were associated with the Exxon Station or the convenience store,” Hartman reported.
