On a tip from a caller, cops found a felon with a handgun — in a car with kids outside an elementary school.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Dave Hartman:
Just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Officers Brian Pazsac and James Murcko responded to a report of a man with an outstanding drug-dealing warrant in a car outside Wexler Grant School. Cops spotted the car in front of the school’s main entrance. The wanted man was in the back seat with a 14-year-old boy and a 9‑year-old girl, whose mother was inside the school.
As the man was getting out of the car, he took a gun out of his pocket and placed it on the back seat, pointing toward the kids. Officer Murcko put the man in handcuffs as Officer Pazsak recovered the gun.
The children’s mother told cops she’d picked up the man when he called her for a ride. She then stopped at the school to pick up her kids.
Cops charged the man, a 30-year-old convicted felon, with gun charges and served him with three outstanding warrants. His gun, a silver Interarms .38 special revolver loaded with hollow-point bullets, had been stolen from Rockford, Illinois.
As the man sat in the back of cruiser, a young man passing by called out, “You good?”
“I’m good,” the man responded. “They caught me with a strap.”
Arrest Made: In other police news, according to Hartman, police Tuesday arrested a Meriden man accused of home invasion and sexual assault of an 18-year-old New Haven woman on April 12.
