Two nonprofits are stepping up to tutor adults in reading in the wake of the demise of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven (LVGNH).
LVGNH shut its doors in April after five decades of enlisting volunteers to teach adults.
Fair Haven-based Springs Learning Center has agreed to take over the tutoring site LVGNH ran in the basement of Gateway Community College’s downtown campus starting Sept. 8, according to a release issued Tuesday. (Find out more about the agency here.) The literacy agency, a project of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, also plans to make one-on-one tutoring available at its Blatchley Avenue location.
LVGNH also operated in Meriden and Wallingford. Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut plans to assume the job of tutoring in that area on July 15.
