In the center of Fair Haven, a patient audience sits on the ground in the shade of a tree watching the artists — three of them — work paints and brushes, sometimes from ladders, sometimes sitting on the sidewalk. A mash-up of black scribbles covering parts of the wall is being transformed into recognizable figures: the legs of a horse, perhaps the front end of a trolley.

Monk-Kelley and Davis-Wardlaw, lifelong friends.
This following writeup was submitted by Addie Davis-Wardlaw.
My daughter, Laura Dixon, and my college roommate and best friend’s daughter, LaShante’ James, both received the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) 2025 Assistant Principal of the Year award for their respective school levels. Laura received the elementary award for her exceptional work at John Barry Elementary School in Meriden, and LaShante’ was honored with the high school award for her dedication at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk.
My friend, Dr. Pamela Monk-Kelley (LaShante’s mother), and I, Addie Davis-Wardlaw, first met at Southern Connecticut State University in 1973 while attending their summer program designed to acclimate minority students to college life. There, our friendship began.

Growing up in New Haven, the professional wrestling shows put on by the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) were at the New Haven Coliseum seemingly every month. Fans poured in from across the state to see talents like Andre the Giant, Undertaker, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H. The last wrestling show at the New Haven Coliseum was held over two decades ago, in August 2002 – and with the closure of the Coliseum in the same year, wrestling lost its New Haven home.

This month, James Hillhouse High School was honored to be a stop on this year’s Wreaths Across America convoy along their way to Arlington National Cemetery.
The school was tapped because of Hillhouse JROTC’s yearly participation in the National Wreaths Across America Day wreath-laying ceremony over the last four years. The convoy started in Maine and traveled for six days, making three stops each day at designated locations until they reached Arlington. They stopped at Hillhouse on Dec. 10.

Ibrahim Yusif: “I'm trying [to bring my family from Sudan to New Haven], but it's a difficult thing.”
Ibrahim Yusif grew up near the city of El Geneina in Darfur in western Sudan. One of five brothers and three sisters, he lived on the farm where his family grew mangoes, guavas, lemons, tomatoes, okra, sweet potatoes, millet, corn, and beans. “We harvest it over there and we take it to El Geneina to sell, before the war.”
Yusif is one of a growing number of Sudanese refugees who have relocated to New Haven — and are urging city residents and political leaders in their adopted home country to pay attention to, and to help stop, one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
