One person died in a car crash and a driver killed a pedestrian in a separate incident this weekend on New Haven’s streets.
Here’s what happened in the two incidents, according to releases issued by NHPD spokesperson Sgt. Cherelle Carr:
The first incident, a head-on collision, occurred at the intersection of Hemingway and Russell Street in the Heights Saturday night at around 8:34 p.m.
Firefighters were driving a department SUV westbound on Hemingway; the driver of a Honda Accord headed east on Hemingway.
“It was reported” that the Accord driver “swerved over the doubled line into” the SUV’s lane, “causing the head-on collision,” according to Carr.
“The Accord’s rested position was over the double line in the westbound land. The SUV’s rested position was in the westbound lane on Hemingway Street,” Carr wrote.
Firefighters involved in the crash tried to help the Accord driver, including administering Narcan “for an apparent medical emergency.”
Everyone involved was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where the Accord driver, a male, died.
Police had not released names of the involved parties by mid-day Sunday.
The fatal pedestrian crash occurred across town in the Hill at the intersection of Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and Washington Avenue Sunday around 1:28 a.m.
A driver in a “dark colored vehicle hit the pedestrian, then fled the scene. The victim, also not yet publicly identified by the NHPD, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Crash Reconstruction Team spoke to witnesses and found video footage to begin its investigation.

This is just terrible and an unnecessary loss of lives and shattered families. I am truly sorry for their loss. I wish we didnt have to use cars and that getting a drivers license was just a tad more difficult. It also doesnt help that you can buy temporary dealer plates from Texas and other states and just drive around without being stopped by the police; some enforcement would be helpful, you just have to drive around the city. If we had better public transportation maybe more people would use it instead of being behind the wheel of a car. Not all of us can use bicycles to move around the city.
