Alleged Shooter Arrested

Police have charged a 19-year-old man with shooting a then-17-year-old Hillhouse High student who was on his way walking to school.

The shooting took place last Sept. 17. A man stopped the student, tried to rob him, then shot him in the thigh and fled.

A team of detectives — including Michael White, Betsy Segui, Orlando Crespo, and members of the department’s shooting task force — have been investigating the incident ever since. They obtained an arrest warrant for the 19-year alleged shooter, who lived in Newhallville at the time and now lives in West Haven. They arrested him Monday night.

The victim, who has recovered and now lives in Philadelphia, positively identified the alleged shooter, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

One of the significant factors that are contributing to the continued decline in violence in New Haven is the extraordinary work of the Shooting Task Force,” stated Police Chief Dean Esserman. This task force, comprised of Investigators and Detectives from several agencies, under the command of the New Haven Police Department, is relentless in their pursuit of justice”.
