The Branford High School Unified Soccer Team was one of the 13 schools to field a team in the recent Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) soccer tournament held at Amity High School in Woodbridge.
The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) reports, “Unified Sports is a registered program of Special Olympics that combines approximately equal numbers of athletes with and without intellectual disability on sports teams for training and competition.
All Unified Sports players, both athletes and special partners, are of similar age and matched sports skill ability.” The program began in 1992 when Connecticut Special Olympics formed a partnership with the CIAC and operates throughout the school year.
Branford is a member of the Southern Connecticut Conference and member schools that competed in the recent soccer competition includes Branford, Amity, West Haven, Law, Hand, East Haven, Guilford, Cheshire, North Haven, Hamden, Wilbur Cross, Hillhouse and Foran.
Each team played four 15 minute games and then headed to the Amity cafeteria for pizza and to receive their medals.
The Albertus Magnus girls basketball team members volunteered as officials for the event.
