Cabrera Racks Up More Labor Endorsements

Jorge Cabrera continued winning labor endorsements for his quest to become the next state senator from the 17th District.

His campaign announced Monday that Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Connecticut State Council along with three locals — SEIU Local 1199, CSEA/SEIU Local 2001, and 32BJ SEIU — have voted to endorse him.

The statewide council, the largest union in Connecticut, represents over 65,000 nurses, home healthcare workers, food service employees, municipal employees and maintenance staffers.

This former union organizer can successfully bring his background and skill to bear against the incumbent Republican’s do-nothing dogma, which threatens the ability of working people to recover from the ongoing crises of racial injustice, economic inequality and a raging pandemic,” 32BJ wrote in its endorsement statement.

Cabrera, an organizer with the United Food and Commercial Workers, previously racked up endorsements from the state AFL-CIO, Communication Workers of America Local 1298, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 478, New Haven County Building Trades, and Carpenters Local 236.

Cabrera faces fellow Democrat Justin Farmer in an Aug. 11 primary. Farmer has won the endorsements of environmental groups as well as backing from Hamden social-justice activists.

The winner of the primary will face incumbent Republican State. Sen. George Logan in the Nov. 3 general election. Logan defeated Cabrera in the 2018 election by 77 votes.

The 17th Senate District encompasses parts of Hamden, Woodbridge, and Naugatuck, and all of Bethany, Beacon Falls, Derby, and Ansonia.

Farmer and Cabrera will square off in an primary debate on July 28. The Valley Independent Sentine, New Haven Independent and WNHH FM are hosting the debate. Have a suggested question for the candidates in that debate? .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
