Call Him Judge Carchia

Americo Carchia.

Democrat Americo Carchia will serve as New Haven’s next probate judge, after capturing four-fifths of the vote.

Carchia captured 15,581 votes, or 81.19 percent, on polling machines in Tuesday’s election, according to results collected by the New Haven Independent. His opponent, Independent party candidate Jerald Barber, received 3,601, or 18.76 percent, of the machine vote.

The total does not include the 2,788 absentee ballots returned to the City Clerk’s office, a number that will not change the outcome.

Carchia will succeed Probate Judge Clifton Graves, Jr., who is retiring.

I want to thank everyone for supporting me. I certainly hope to be able to serve the community in the best way possible and treat everyone with dignity, care and respect,” Carchia said Tuesday night.

The probate judge handles cases involving child custody, parental rights, adoption, and guardianship of intellectually disabled individuals, and approves wills and name changes.
