Two people died following an early Sunday morning car crash on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard in the Hill.
According to a press release published on the New Haven Police Department’s X account on Sunday at 12:10 p.m., city police officers were dispatched at around 2:50 a.m. to the 500 block of Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, between Adeline Street and Printer’s Lane.
They were responding to the report of “a motor vehicle accident in which a vehicle struck a tree and caught fire.”
New Haven Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and put out the fire.
Once the fire was extinguished, “they discovered a body in the rear seat of the vehicle, deceased.”
“A short time later,” Yale New Haven Hospital notified city police officers that another individual had been transported to the emergency department via a private vehicle “and appeared to have been involved in the same collision.”
The second victim, a 40-year-old man, also died from his injuries.
“At this time it appears only one vehicle was involved in the crash,” the press release states. “The identifies of both people are being withheld pending notification to their families.”
Update: On Sept. 3, police identified the two victims of the fatal crash as 40-year-old New Havener Nicky Perez and 37-year-old New Havener Lymarys Walker.
