Healthy Start Money OK’d

A program to provide pregnant women with increased access to health services and postpartum education will continue getting federal funding through March — thanks to a vote by the Board of Alders.

Alders unanimously voted Wednesday night to approve a resolution from the health department to continue facilitating the New Haven Healthy Start Initiative, administered by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, which would bring $104,167 of federal funds to the city.

The Healthy Start Initiative provides family support to families who don’t have a family network,” said Maria Damiani, the city’s head of maternal, child and family health. Partner organizations — including the Fair Haven Community Health Center, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Cornell Hill Health Center — will collaborate to ensure pregnant and postpartum women can get the care they need to have healthy babies and families.

Services include insurance registration, pediatric and family care, and early childhood education.

The continued funding will begin Sept. 1 through March 31, 2016.
