Compost Headlines: Nuns vs. Sidewalks

Thank you Paul, for reminding us to care about and to have faith in doing the right thing.

From what I have been able to gather from some of the responses from people who live in and around the area proposed for these new sidewalks (I have no idea how many), there seem to be some legitimate concerns about this project. Despite Paul Bass's "sidewalks are one of the keys to a democratic society" speech, the concerns of those that live closest to these proposed "improvements" need to be given some strong consideration.

We haven't been out at the compost heap in a while have we? Welcome back, ye heap of common sense.

Wait...sidewalks? You mean like the:

Perfectly ADA-compliant sidewalks in front of schools in New Haven's Whitest neighborhoods
or
the sidewalks that are full of ADA violations that deny students with disabilities the right to access their schools in Black, Hispanic and Asian neighborhoods?
or
the sidewalk 100 ft from one of those schools that was reported to have caused an injury 19 months ago?
or
the sidewalk that denies people who are homeless and disabled the right to access DESK's food distribution on Temple St.
or
The sidewalk that denies disabled voters in Ward 7 the right to access their polling place?
or
the sidewalk alongside the County Courthouse that's full of ADA violations that the Mayor and two Alders rode by on their new bike lane for a photo-op in that other local news outlet?
or
the sidewalks that deny people with disabilities the right to access the Federal or State Superior Courthouses
or
the sidewalks that deny people with disabilities the right to access New Haven City Hall
or
the sidewalks that deny people with disabilities the right to access trinity Lutheran, St Joseph's, St. John's, Trinity on the Green, The UCC or the Christian Science Reading Room
or
the sidewalk that denies people with disabilities the right to travel on College St. right next to the bike lane that able folks like the Mayor and those two Alders can ride on while saying "nah,nah,nah, nah, nah, we can ride past you faster and you cannot moo-oove."
or
the sidewalks that...ready?... deny people with disabilities the right to access parking spaces that are reserved for people with disabilities
or any of the other 150+ sidewalks that the City of New Haven has ignored in violation on a twenty-year-old Federal law?

or do you mean the sidewalks that deny people with disabilities the right access to the US Attorney's Office reviewing the discrimination complaint about those sidewalks?

Oh...wait...you mean sidewalks that don't exist in Hamden.

Nevermind.

In Short Beach a decade ago, the State (and maybe in conjunction with the town?) put in a sidewalk from the center of Short Beach where there is a Post Office, restaurant and gas station all the way to the Plaza where there's a grocery store and other stores.

It goes through a neighborhood, past a Senior Center, dog park, etc.

And, every Labor Day along this stretch there is a children's parade and a weekend of activities.

What kind of craziness is it that people can come up with ideas to NOT have a side walk?

It builds community and lots of other things!!!!

Build more sidewalks wherever they are needed!!! Please!!!!

Sidewalks. When we moved here, we found a beautiful house in a nameless suburb, but I refused to live somewhere there are no - guess what (?) - sidewalks! No sidewalks, no community. So we moved to New Haven, on a beautiful street in Westville with sidewalks, which had recently been featured on the cover of the New York Times Magazine in an article about, what else (?), community. That said, I wish the city would fix those sidewalks once in a while.
