Deal Nears On Shaw’s Replacement

Negotiators appear to be closing in on a deal to bring supermarket shopping back to the Dwight neighborhood.

A couple of different supermarket operators have expressed interest in the former Shaw’s store on Whalley Avenue since Shaw’s closed it in March, throwing 100 people out of work and leaving neighbors with no supermarket within walking distance.

Since then the Greater Dwight Development Corporation (GDDC), which owns the plaza anchored by the store, has sought to find a new operator. It is currently working on a deal with a supermarket chain. Yale’s Office of New Haven and State Affairs has helped with negotiations.

Negotiators are remaining mum on the identity of that chain.

They’re working diligently on” the deal, reported Yale Associate Vice-President Abigail Rider, the university point person helping with the talks.

I’m confident there will be a great supermarket in that spot,” she said. She said expects the deal to close before the end of the year. She wasn’t as sure that the new operator would be open for business by the end of the year. Whoever goes in will do some improvements. Certainly the arrangements will be final. Whether the store is actually operating or not depends on their final plans.”

Another person familiar with the negotiations confirmed that they’re in the home stretch.”

GDDC Executive Director Linda Townsend-Maier declined to disclose details about the talks before their completion. We’re seriously negotiating,” she said. We don’t want to negotiate this in the press.”

Stop & Shop Supermarkets didn’t respond to a request for comment about whether it is the chain that’s negotiating.

A Norwalk supermarket owner named Antonio Pena said he wished he were the one in negotiations. He proposed opening a franchise of the Staten Island-based Key Food market in the old Dwight space.

Now, he reported Tuesday, I’m pretty much on hold” while GDDC negotiates with the unnamed national chain. I’m not too happy. Hopefully they don’t make the deal. I’d like to go in there.”
