Democracy School Applications Open Through Friday

Looking for a crash course in how New Haven city government works?

There’s a school for that — Democracy School, that is, which is now accepting applications through Friday for a new 30-student cohort.

Click here, here, and here or see below for more information on how to apply to the City Hall-run program, which features weekly presentations by city department heads and civic leaders about the ins and outs of municipal government.

Yours truly went through the program back in 2017 and learned a lot. And then wrote about it here. My colleague Laura Glesby wrote about her more recent experience sitting through the then-online-only version of Democracy School last year here.

The Democracy School is a great opportunity for New Haven residents to learn more about how their city government works, to engage with city officials and civic leaders on some of the key issues and challenges facing our communities, and to become more equipped and empowered to get involved in civic life and government,” Mayor Elicker said in a statement sent along to the Independent encouraging New Haveners to apply.

Ultimately, New Haven is a stronger city when more of our residents are actively engaged and involved in helping to move our city forward. The Democracy School is a great place to start.”
