Dr. Ned Takes New Haven

A strange psychedelic sentinel descended on New Haven, sharing sounds and visions from another time.

The time-traveler was Dr. Ned’s Incredible Psychedelic Jukebox,” an artwork created by Bill Saunders, local artist and organizer of the annual Ideat Village alternative arts festival.

For several night’s last week, Saunders erected his jukebox” at locations around town, playing classic albums from the 60s and 70s from a box painted with psychedelic day-glo swirls. Click the play arrow to see it in action, playing Peace Frog” by The Doors.

Saunders created the piece from ceiling panels once found in a room (pictured) in the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Saunders belonged to the frat in the 80s, when he was a student at the school. He said he lived in the room during his senior year, and saved the panels when the fraternity lost the house.

Saunders sent in these photos of the jukebox’s journey, including its return to Troy, to the fraternity’s new home in an old church.
