Elicker: 100% Comply With Vax-Or-Test Mandate

It worked.

So Mayor Justin Elicker reported Wednesday about his new mandate for city employees to either get vaccinated against Covid-19 or submit to weekly testing.

He announced at a press conference at police headquarters that 100 percent of city employees have either taken their first vaccine or signed up for weekly tests (required for people who opt out of getting shots).

The mandate helped encourage employees to get vaccinated, Elicker said — mirroring an observation about the impact of similar mandates, from New York to France.

Eighty-four New Haven city government employees got the vaccine since he announced the mandate, Elicker said. The number of partially or fully vaccinated police department employees — a group that had been hesitant about vaccines, amid crushing national caseloads in the ranks — has risen to 65 percent.

The number of city employees includes about 1,250 workers, according to mayoral spokesperson Kyle Buda. It doesn’t include Board of Education employees, who are covered under a similar vax-or-test state mandate.
