ESUMS Vote On Hold

New Haven lawmakers agreed not to act on a proposed $85.5 million plan for a new school — until West Haven lawmakers act.

That’s because the proposed new school, although a New Haven public school, would be built in West Haven.

New Haven aldermen agreed not to vote on the plan until they receive assurances that West Haven will not charge New Haven $500,000 in building permit fees.

The plan to build a new Engineering and Science University Magnet School was on the Board of Aldermen’s agenda at its meeting Monday night. Majority Leader Al Paolillo passed over the item without action.

West Haven’s City Council is scheduled to meet Monday, Nov. 25. By the time the Board of Aldermen meets again, on Dec. 2, it should have an answer on the building permit fees.

The fees are expected to total $1 million. The University of New Haven would pay half of that cost, and the town of West Haven would waive the rest, pending city council approval.

Aldermen checked with the Board of Ed point person Susan Weisselberg before Monday’s meeting, to make sure a delayed vote wouldn’t harm the school construction project. Weisselberg told lawmakers that the sooner the vote happens, the better.

We just need to make our construction deadline at the end of June,” she said. It’s going to be tight.”

Aldermen received a report from the Board of Ed, detailing the cost of the school. Click here to read it.
