Five firefighters became lieutenants Tuesday at the latest meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners.
The promoted firefighters each filed into the almost empty New Haven Fire Department conference room to take an oath of duty, right hand raised, and then receive a lieutenant pin from Fire Chief John Alston Jr. with their family by side.
One firefighter, newly minted Lt. Ryan Doherty, knelt down after he completed the oath so his two small children, wearing identical dresses and tiny black masks, could both fasten the pin onto his jacket.
The other new lieutenants are Michael Salzillo, Samod Rankins, Jonathan Clarke, and Daniel W. Sullivan.
After the promotions, Chief Alston recognized two other individuals for their contributions to the department.
Ray Saracco, current fire marshal in Cromwell, Connecticut, also received recognition at Tuesday’s meeting for his work as acting assistant chief of administration of the fire department during the pandemic. Previously, he was a supervisor of fire investigation in New Haven.
“It’s been an honor,” Saracco said of his time working in New Haven. “I couldn’t ask for anything more [than] to get something like this from the department.”
This promotion is just a small gesture in front of your hard work. I know you were in the running with many others who'd likely shine too.
Will Rogers said, "Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there". Heed those cautionary words.
Remember the oath you took and the responsibilities you had when you graduated as new firefighters. They're no less important now than they were then. Be positive, principled, pro-active and productive. Above all, be fair. You deserved these promotions, and for that, New Haven deserves your best. Stay safe and congratulations.
Ray... You are sadly missed here. Best wishes to you as you embark on this exciting new chapter.
