Foote Mathletes” Score

On March 12, the 2016 State MATHCOUNTS competition was held at the University of Hartford. A team of middle school Mathletes” from The Foote School in New Haven won first place. The top individual was Siddharth Jain from Shelton Intermediate School in Shelton.

Members of the winning team are Noah Lee, Ting Li, David Metrick and Kyle Shin and the coaches are Megan Williams and David Metrick.

The second, third and fourth-place teams are Middlesex Middle School in Darien, Dodd Middle School in Cheshire and Irving Robbins Middle School in Farmington, respectively.

The top four individuals from the state competition will represent Connecticut at the 2016 Raytheon Mathcounts National Competition in Washington, DC, May 8 – 9. The four team members are Siddharth Jain in first place, from Shelton Intermediate School in Shelton; David Metrick in second place, from The Foote School in New Haven; Sam Florin, in third place, from Central Middle School in Greenwich; and Will Zhu, in fourth place, from Dodd Middle School in Cheshire. The coach is Megan Williams from The Foote School.

In our increasingly technological society, those students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. As the only nationwide math enrichment, club and competition program designed to improve math skills for U.S. middle school students, Mathcounts prepares students for future career opportunities and success. More than 6 million students across the U.S. have participated in Mathcounts programs.

The competition is organized by the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers, hosted by the University of Hartford and sponsored by the Connecticut Engineers Education Foundation.
