Former FLOTUS Fistbumps” Possible Futures

On Small Business Saturday,” a stack of Michelle Obama’s latest books made its way from the shelf of New Haven’s newest local bookstore to the former First Lady’s Facebook page.

Possible Futures, an independent bookstore on Edgewood Avenue that opened this fall, was one of five small bookstores to receive a shout-out from Michelle Obama’s social media on Saturday.

Obama, who recently published a book called The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times, captioned images of her hardcover books at bookshops including Possible Futures with the note: On this #SmallBusinessSaturday, let’s give it up for all the independent bookstores and booksellers for everything they do. I’m so grateful for their support of #TheLightWeCarry, and I hope all of you will check out your neighborhood bookstore this holiday season and all year round.”

Reached for comment on Monday about Obama’s social media post, Possible Futures’ founder Lauren Anderson wrote in a text message to the Independent: The way she is in the world feels like a spiritual fistbump for so many of us. I think it’s special when someone like that enters into our orbit in a small way, like this, and we are reminded of how interconnected the world is. … I think it’s very HER to give that spiritual fistbump to folks who aren’t famous, or established, but still doing what they love.”

I think Michelle Obama really knows it’s not easy to be a bookstore these days, and that it’s always at least somewhat a labor of love,” Anderson added.

Obama reposted an image originally published on Possible Futures’ Instagram page. Anderson noted that the image included candles from a Bridgeport-based, Black-women-owned business called Natural Annie’s Essentials. She said a friend’s niece named Tyra had arranged the Obama books with care.
