United Way and Avangrid at the Columbus Academy free tax prep site in Fair Haven.

United Way sent in the following release:

With a little more than three weeks left in tax season, United Way and Avangrid Foundation want to remind people that volunteers can help file their taxes for free at sites across greater New Haven.

The Avangrid Foundation is the charitable arm of AVANGRID, an integrated energy company based in Orange, Conn. AVANGRID is the parent company of United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas.

Looking for a secure way to file your taxes without fees? Come to one of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites throughout greater New Haven before the April 15th Tax Day deadline. IRS-certified volunteers work one-on-one with taxpayers with annual incomes up to $55,000 to prepare and electronically file their state and federal income tax forms at no charge.

VITA is an IRS program, supported locally by United Way of Greater New Haven and Avangrid Foundation to help put working families on a path to financial stability.

We know that free tax preparation is just one way for working families to keep more of the money they worked hard to earn, and generous partners like Avangrid Foundation and their family of companies helps make this work possible,” said Amy Casavina Hall, United Way of Greater New Haven’s Chief Impact Officer.

Last year, VITA served nearly 4,500 tax filers in greater New Haven, helping return more than $7 million to families in our region alone.

We understand how critically important access to financial education and services is to the health, welfare and success of families,” said Nicole Licata Grant, Director Avangrid Foundation.“United Way’s passion and expertise for helping our neighbors in need makes us feel good about our investment in their financial stability work.”

Filers must bring a valid ID, social security cards, wage and earning statements, interest and dividend statements, a copy of last year’s CT and federal income tax forms, and proof of bank account routing numbers for refund direct deposit. For a full list of requirements and VITA sites, visit uwgnh.org/VITA or call 2 – 1‑1.

Our VITA partners include the City of New Haven, Avangrid Foundation, the IRS, Citibank, Citizens Bank, Newtown Savings Bank, Wells Fargo, and Connecticut Association for Human Services (CAHS).
