The first win of the season is always special for any team and the Branford girls’ soccer team achieved that win last week with a 3 – 0 victory over the Wilbur Cross Governors at the James L. MacVeigh Alumni Athletic Complex.
“The first win’s nice,” said Coach Jen Kohut (pictured) after the game. “We moved the ball around today and got some goal production; that was the difference.”
The Lady Hornets had only one goal in their first two games, losing to Guilford 4 – 1 and East Haven 3 – 0.
Co-Captain Carolyn Caminear (pictured) scored Branford’s first goal at 15:41 of the first half for a 1 – 0 lead and Senior Jenna Vitale added a second goal at 32:24 to give the Lady Hornets a 2 goal cushion.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Grabowiecki (pictured) made several tough saves to earn her first varsity shutout. Here she is as teammates Carly Rondo #20, Jessica O’Connor #2, Carolyn Caminear #19 and Taylor Brown #7 move in to help.
“Nina played well today and our defenders did a good job of keeping the ball away from our goal. Overall we were happy getting our first victory,” Kohut told the Eagle.
Senior Caroline Beatty uses her body to stop the ball as Cross players Drew Johnson and Thea Ranelli and teammate Isabel Bysiewicz move in.

Junior Morgan Ashby kicks the ball out of the Branford zone.
Since the Wilbur Cross game, Branford has played Woodland High School from the Naugatuck Valley League, losing 4 – 1. The team’s next home game is not until Monday, October 5 against Madison’s Daniel Hand High School.
