Gone Dishin’ For A Doc Art

Alan and Judy Cooper, Lenny and Sue Skope and Howard Toubin.Everyone knows to look for their doctors at a golf course or tennis court on a summer weekend day. Monday night’s artist reception might have been mistaken for a medical convention had it not been for the attendance of the other Elm City friends whom Dr. Alan Cooper has acquired with his vocational and volunteer activities around town.

An endodontist (read root canal) by day, his colleagues from the dentistry field were the largest contingent; among the crowd were Dr. Bert and Martha Weisbart, Dr. John and Marcia Gell, Dr. Len and Sue Skope, Dr. John and Bev Levy and Dr. Milt and Joan Wallack. Gastroenterology was represented by Dr. Howard Taubin and psychiatrist Dr. Butch Shimmelman served as wine steward. Radiologist Dr. Gerald and Marilyn Fishbone, endocronologist Dr. Mark and Henni Schwartz were also among the group. Not one symptom was discussed; instead, they all turned to admire the photography work, an avocation shared by many of those present.

The exhibit, titled A Visit to the Garden: Glass & Flowers showcases Alan’s photographs of the Dale Chihuly glass exhibit in the New York Botanical Gardens. Alan loves to explore with his passion for photography. Some of his favorite photo shoots include Yellowstone in winter, Smokey Mountain National Park, Bird Migration at Cape May, N.J, and Big Sur in California. Dale Chihuly is an internationally recognized glass artist locally known for the chandelier at Mohegan Sun Casino.

Alan’s other passion these days is as chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council’s initiative in literacy volunteerism. The group is now at several New Haven public schools. They are working to expand their effectiveness by learning Spanish so that they might expand their relationships with some of the youngsters with whom they are working.

Admission to the show is free. Proceeds from any sales of his art will benefit another of his passions, The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

ALL FOR THE GREATER GOOD!!
