Wanted: New Hillhouse High School Principal

The New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) district is looking to hire a new principal for Hillhouse High School, now that Mark Sweeting has stepped down from the role roughly one month before the start of the school year.

Sweeting made that announcement in an email sent to the Hillhouse community on Monday.

He first became principal of one of the city’s two comprehensive high schools in July 2022 after the sudden departure of long-time Hillhouse Principal Glen Worthy, who took a position as chief of educational services for the state Department of Children and Families (DCF).

The NHPS Human Resources department posted the Hillhouse principal job opening on Tuesday at a base salary of $154,111 — $167,607. Click here to view the posting.

Sweeting sent the Hillhouse community a notice of his departure via email on Monday.

In his email, Sweeting said, While Hillhouse and New Haven has sincerely been a haven to me, at this time, I have to make a decision best for my family and me.”

He added that over the past year he is proud of the school accomplishments like revitalizing Hillhouse Publications, creating a dedicated art wing, and decreasing the school’s truancy rate.
