Another round of Hillhouse students recently finished the course for emergency medical technicians.

Seven students received their graduation certificates from the EMT course on June 5, according to New Haven Fire Department EMS Supervisor Ken Oliver.

The class is part of the Police/Fire/EMS Public Safety Academy that was established back in 2011. The academy was the brainchild of now retired Fire Capt. Gary Tinney, who was on hand for the graduation, current instructor William Garraty, and city Chief Administrative Officer Michael Carter. (Read about that here.)

The EMT course helps move students in a position to obtain their EMT certification, and if they so desire, help them advance any dreams of becoming a member of the fire department, Oliver said. (Read more about a previous graduation here.)

Some of the students last year took the EMR course [emergency medical responder which is the basic certification],” he said. Some students took the EMT and CNA [certified nurse’s assistant] course at the same time. They will now go on to take the national exam to obtain their state certification.”
