The Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has chosen New Haven Independent reporters for 11 awards for stories reported in 2024.
SPJ announced those awards Monday as part of its annual Excellence in Journalism Contest.
The Independent articles that won awards include:
• Arts, Entertainment, Food & Leisure, third place: “Post-Punk Legends Bring Nostalgia, Rebirth,” by Karen Ponzio
• Continuing Coverage or Series, first place: Coverage of Retreat rehab center closure, by Paul Bass, Thomas Breen, and Dereen Shirnekhi
• Continuing Coverage or Series, third place: From can collector to bomb suspect, by Thomas Breen and Jabez Choi
• Courts/Crime, second place: “Landlord-Boss Boots Injured Migrant Worker,” by Laura Glesby
• Education, first place: “Back In School, Back In Uniforms,” by Maya McFadden
• Government, first place: “Arrested Pol Builds Marriage Biz,” by Paul Bass
• Health, first place: “Time For Supervised Injection Sites?,” by Laura Glesby
• In-Depth Local Reporting, first place: “No ‘Inclusionary’ Apartments Built So Far,” by Thomas Breen
• In-Depth Local Reporting, second place: “In 2024, Megalandlords Sold Big,” by Thomas Breen
• Investigative, first place: “Alder Fired From Drug Rehab Job After Sexual Relationship With Patient,” by Laura Glesby
• Investigative, third place: “Arrested Pol Builds Marriage Biz,” by Paul Bass
