In the heart of New Haven’s Edgewood Park, a powerful story of remembrance, community, and life-saving inspiration will unfold on Sunday, April 27, as Julia’s Run for Children returns for its annual 5K run/walk. This event honors the legacy of Julia Rusinek, a vibrant Yale student whose life was tragically cut short at the young age of 21 due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Julia dedicated her time and energy to working with and advocating for underprivileged children, and her passion continues to resonate through this event.
But Julia’s story has an even deeper impact. Her untimely passing became one of the catalysts for the creation of Six Minutes to Live, a non-profit organization now dedicated to preventing deaths from sudden cardiac arrest. This remarkable connection adds a profound layer of meaning to Julia’s Run, truly transforming it into a celebration of life, hope, and the enduring power of one person’s spirit.
Beyond honoring Julia’s memory, the run raises crucial funds for LEAP (Leadership, Education & Athletics in Partnership), a local organization providing free after-school and summer programs for youth in underserved New Haven neighborhoods. LEAP’s comprehensive programming, ranging from academic support to athletic enrichment, empowers young people to reach their full potential. All proceeds from Julia’s Run will be donated to LEAP, and participating in the run directly fuels LEAP’s vital work, ensuring a brighter future for countless children in our community.
