Democrats won big in Democratic New Haven, according to unofficial early returns compiled by the Independent.
Tabulations from New Haven’s 40 polling stations show overwhelming victories for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden (who easily won the state vote as well), U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, and Democratic Registrar of Voters, and all incumbent state representatives.
New Haven voters also helped to reelect State Sen. Martin Looney by a wide expected margin; New Haven and West Haven voters appeared to have reelected State Sen. Gary Winfield.
An estimated 14,000 absentee ballots remained to be counted in New Haven; some 8,000 were expected to be counted Tuesday night, the rest on Wednesday and maybe Thursday.
Based just on the machine counts, two third-party registrar of voters candidates failed to gain more votes than Republican Registrar Marlene Napolitano, which would mean neither would win office.

Biden received 22,522 in-person New Haven votes compared to 4,994 for Republican President Donald Trump, according to the unofficial tallies.
Looney thanked voters for returning him for a 15th term to the State Senate, where he serves as president pro tem. (The district also includes part of North Haven.)
“I’m very grateful to people to continue giving me this opportunity. It’s deeply gratifying. I look forward to the next term,” Looney said.
He vowed to fight for a more progressive tax structure, a public option for health care, and more funding for public education in the next term. Initial returns also gave him hope that the Democrats will either hold or perhaps increase their 22 – 14 majority in the chamber, though it was too early to tell for sure Tuesday night.
Looney collected 8,928 in-person New Haven votes compared to 2,519 for Republican Jameson White and 283 for independent Alex Taubes, according to unofficial tabulations.
“I want to thank the hundreds of voters who voted for me in this election. Although we came in third place, this has been a process of accountability. We will continue to hold Sen. Looney to the progressive priorities he laid out during this campaign,” Taubes said.
