Interim Police Chief Renee Dominguez has named two new district managers and shuffled around some top spots as part of an ongoing remaking of the department.
She promoted Lt. Sean Maher, the popular top cop in Downtown’s District 1, to a a planning position in the chiefs’ suite. He’ll focus on strategic planning for the department, legislative work, and crime prevention, he informed Ninth Square merchants at a meeting this week.
“We’ve always had a planning unit. But we haven’t really been able to staff it” for a while, Dominguez observed.
Maher will continue projects he began with Downtown community groups, including a rethinking of the area around 55 Church St. “He has a real love for problem-solving through environmental design and thinking outside the box about ways” to address crime, Dominguez said.
Newly promoted Lt. Brendan Borer will replace Maher as district manager. The district includes Wooster Square as well as Downtown.
Dominguez has also tapped newly promoted Lt. Ryan Przybylski to replace newly promoted Capt. John Healy as top cop in the two districts Healy has been overseeing: Dwight/Kensington and “WEB” (Whalley/Edgewood/Beaver Hills).
Healy is taking over supervision of the detective bureau.
The bureau had been under the command of Sgt. Bertram Ettienne.
“We’re adding a layer of supervision,” Dominguez said. Healy will oversee both parts of the bureau: major crimes, which investigates homicides, shootings, robberies, burglaries; and a plainclothes unit that includes the shootings task force, the intelligence until, narcotics, and partnerships with federal law-enforcement agencies. Reporting to Healy, Ettienne will continue day-to-day management of the major crimes side, according to Dominguez.
